What is the treatment for a gummy smile?

Botulinum toxin injections are the non-surgical cosmetic answer to treating a gummy smile.

Botulinum toxin is a protein produced in laboratories that has been used in cosmetic and aesthetic contexts since the 1990’s.

Is this gummy smile treatment safe?

Due to the low concentration of the Botulinum toxin used in this treatment it is very safe.

How do the gummy smile injections work?

As a gummy smile can be caused by a hyperactive lip muscle, the Botulinum toxin injection is used to block the nerve impulse to that muscle. The hyperactive muscle will be weakened, resulting in less lip elevation and less gum showing when you smile.

What areas are treated?

The hyperactive muscle that is causing your gummy smile is the area that will be treated.

How does the gummy smile treatment take place?

Before any treatment, you will have a full consultation with one of our highly qualified, friendly medical professionals. They will discuss your suitability for the Botulinum toxin treatment and devise a customised plan for you.

The treatment takes about 15 minutes. Local anaesthetic is applied to the injections sites on each side of the upper lip and then small quantities of the Botulinum toxin serum are injected.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

This treatment is suitable for people who have a gummy smile caused by a hyperactive muscle. However, it should be avoided by anyone with muscle problems; nerve damage; or who is pregnant or breastfeeding.

How long does the treatment last?

The effects of the treatment will last for about 3-4 months.

Side effects

The side effects are minimal and temporary. The most common injection related reactions are:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Discolouration
  • Tenderness

These generally resolve within 2 – 7 days.

If you suffer from cold sores, this treatment may trigger an outbreak.

After Care

To avoid swelling and bruising:

  • Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or advil for 2 days after treatment, OR for one week prior to treatment
  • Ice the swollen area
  • DO NOT rub or massage face for 4 hours after treatment – this will spread the injected material to other muscles in your face
  • Avoid exercise, apart from walking for 24 hours after treatment.
