What are lip fillers?
Lip fillers contain Hyarulonic Acid, a natural hydration substance that the body produces. The material plumps up the skin, fills wrinkles and adds volume and definition. This substance is broken down over time and reabsorbed into the body resulting in a non-permanent cosmetic effect, but one that can be repeated.
Are lip fillers safe?
As lip fillers are manufactured using Hyaluronic Acid which occurs naturally in the body, the risk of an adverse reaction is significantly reduced.
How do lip fillers work?
Lip fillers work by adding volume to the injection sites. The volume of injected material is directly related to the effect produced. These effects are visible immediately so it is easy to tailor your treatment to achieve the exact look that you desire. The Hyaluronic Acid attracts and binds water molecules within your skin, producing a fresher, more hydrated look.
Suitable areas for treatment
- Vermilion border or lip outline – adds definition
- Body of the lip – augmentation of the fleshy upper and lower lip giving volume and fullness
- Cupid’s Bow – gives definition and accentuates contouring
How does the lip filler treatment take place?
15 – 20 minutes before the treatment takes place, a prescription anaesthetic cream is applied to the injection sites. The filler is injected at precise locations in your skin or lips and the skin is massaged to smooth out the material. Whilst the treatment is taking place you will be given a mirror to hold so that you can see the results, which are apparent immediately. The whole treatment should take around 30 minutes.
Who is suitable for this treatment?
This treatment is suitable for most people, however not if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How long do lip fillers last?
Depending on the areas treated, and the metabolism rate of the patient, lip fillers can last from 6-12 months. The Hyaluronic Acid is broken down by the body so repeat treatments will be necessary if you wish to maintain a specific look.
If you suffer from cold sores, make sure that you have an oral prescription prior to your treatment as it may provoke an outbreak.
Common injection related effects may include:
