Are you unfortunate enough to suffer from Hyperhydrosis? Botulinum toxin injections can help.
Anyone who does suffer from Hyperhydrosis knows that it is a condition characterised by abnormally increased sweating that is in excess of that required to regulate the body temperature. This can either be generalised over the whole body, or localised to specific parts – the hands, feet, armpits, groin and facial regions being the most commonly affected. Understandably the condition can cause embarrassment and can affect the quality of life of the sufferer, not only physically but also psychologically, emotionally and socially. However, the use of Botulinum toxin injections helps to improve Hyperhydrosis.
What are the causes of Hyperhydrosis?
The cause of localised Hyperhydrosis is largely unknown, although some doctors claim it is due to over activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Feeling anxious or excited can exacerbate the condition for many sufferers. Other factors, such as certain foods, drinks, nicotine, caffeine and some smells, can act as triggers.
What are the available treatments for Hyperhydrosis?
The use of Botulinum toxin injections helps to improve Hyperhydrosis. These injections, more commonly associated with anti-wrinkle treatment, are placed just under the skin and block the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that stimulates the sweat glands. This treatment is usually effective for a period of 6 to 8 months. Another factor that makes Botulinum toxin a good option is that although the effects of the injections eventually wear off and further treatment is necessary, repeat treatments appear to last for just as long, suggesting that patients do not develop a resistance to the treatment.
What is Botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. Botulinum toxin has been approved for use by the FDA since 2002 and is now in regular use by many people. At the Eden Medical Clinic we use a product called Azalure, which we consider to be the best product on the market.
How is the procedure carried out?
When you first attend the Clinic, you will have a full medical consultation with a doctor to ensure that you are suitable for treatment. It is important that you give all relevant medical information
· Are you pregnant, hoping to become pregnant, or breastfeeding
· Are you allergic to any Botulinum toxin products
· Any medications that you are taking
· Have you had any diseases that affect your muscles or nerves
· Have you had, or do you plan to have facial surgery
Only you and your doctor can decide whether this treatment will be suitable for you, based on the information that you provide. On successful completion of the medical examination, the treatment goal will be finalised and a personalised treatment plan will be worked out.
Your doctor may numb the areas to be injected with ice or anaesthetic cream. Any discomfort caused is usually minimal and brief.
After the treatment…
Avoid touching, rubbing or applying make up for four hours after treatment. Also avoid vigorous exercise for twenty four hours. You may experience some redness, bruising and swelling, but this will subside fairly rapidly.
